NICE issues new guidance on Vagus Nerve Stimulation for pharmacoresistant epilepsy in children
The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has issued in March 2004 full guidance to the NHS in England, Scotland and Wales on Vagus Nerve Stimulation for pharmacoresistant epilepsy in children.
The Interventional Procedures Advisory Committee (IPAC) reconsidered this procedure in light of comments received during the initial consultation in May 2003.
Their guidance state that 'current evidence on the safety and efficacy of vagus nerve stimulation for pharmacoresistant epilepsy in children appears adequate to support the use of this procedure, provided that the normal arrangements are in place for consent, audit and clinical governance.'
The Institute has produced information describing its guidance on this procedure for patients, carers and those with a wider interest in healthcare.
It explains the nature of the procedure and the decision made, and has been written with patient consent in mind.
